Cool Shoes
Jonathan Miller, for Audio Flux Circuit 07: Trash or Treasure

When his mom comes home with aching feet, a young inventor fashions a solution from the parts of cast-off gadgets.

Jonathan Miller has produced audio stories from around the world since the late 1980s, although it's been a while since his last one. He founded and co-directs Story House Ithaca, a community organization in his home town of Ithaca, NY. He met the young inventor Teddy Omondi while spending a few months in Kisumu, in western Kenya.

Credits: Deepest thanks to Teddy Omondi and Sarah Okoth for their collaboration on this project. Teddy is a self-taught electronics engineer and product designer living in the Kenyan city of Kisumu, on Lake Victoria. He is looking for work in the technology sector. Sarah has a degree in management but has had difficulty finding work since she moved to the city. Thanks to Stephen Tubula, regional director of the WEEE Centre, for connecting me to Teddy. Based in Nairobi, the WEEE Centre is one of the leading managers of e-waste in Africa.

Cool Shoes was chosen as a Circuit Select for Circuit 07: Trash or Treasure.
