Knit one, Flux two… Circuit 06: Creative Tension is now open for submissions through Sept 15!
And once again, we hope YOU will flux with us.
Audio Flux is a home for short-form, innovative audio. We invite people far and wide to create short “fluxworks” in response to a set of prompts. For each “circuit” we work with a creative partner who inspires these prompts.
We’ve been wanting to collaborate with someone who works with their hands to craft tangible objects, and to explore the ways physical and audio arts might interact Hailing from Hastings, UK, our Circuit 06 creative partner is artist, educator and researcher Lorna Hamilton-Brown. Lorna has long advocated for the recognition of Black knitters and crocheters, and is known as “The Banksy of Knitting,” for her use of the medium in social commentary.
Learn more about Lorna through The Artist and the Machine, a short film by Reuben Armstrong and Jamie Neale (directors), Jamie Frye (sound & music), and Joseph Bicknell (colorist).
HOW IT ALL WORKS:
For Circuit 06 each fluxwork must:
Run exactly three minutes
Take inspiration from the theme: “CREATIVE TENSION”
Include audible REPETITION (nodding to the rhythm of knitting)
And… tell us, what COLOR is your fluxwork?
Twelve submissions will be selected as finalists. From this slate, four will be chosen as Circuit Selects. Each Circuit Select will:
Receive $600
Receive a ticket to the (very sold out) Resonate Podcast Festival (Nov 7-9, Richmond, VA)
Debut at Resonate alongside four commissioned Circuit 06 fluxworks.
Be featured on this website and in The Audio Flux Podcast (coming in October.)
The theme “Creative Tension” is specifically inspired by Lorna’s Tension Birds — a project that explores the mental health benefits of knitting. To create tension birds, Lorna forms small birds from “tension squares,” which are small samples used by knitters to gauge the qualities of a stitch before starting a project. Then she gives the birds away to others.
MORE DETAILS:
All formats and genres are welcome, as long as your submission follows the prompts listed above. We recommend listening to Fluxworks from Circuits 01 through 05 to get a sense for the range of style and approach these may take.
New this circuit (!) All twelve finalists will be shared at the XMTR Festival, (UK) where attendees will be invited to vote for their top four fluxworks. The collective XMTR votes will be incorporated into the Circuit Selects decisions.
Your submission should include:
Mp3 audio file (if we select your work we’ll request a higher resolution audio format)
Title for your fluxwork
One sentence description
Brief bio
A color assignation (in parentheses, following the title)
If your submission is chosen as a Circuit Select we’ll request a headshot and accompanying image to represent your fluxwork.
There’s no cost to participate in Audio Flux. But as part of the entry process, we’ll ask you to acknowledge reading our official rules, which include relevant terms for if/when your fluxwork is chosen as a Circuit Select.
Submissions will be accepted through September 15, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
